I wonder how often interacting with random people over Live produces uncomfortable/awkward situations. I've been feeling off ever since I was playing with some guys off of Rockband. Normally, especially in this game, I don't recieve lasting negative emotions off of these people, even the mean/immature/race/sexists ones. I usually just roll my eyes and move on. But last night I ran into two separate occasions where there was just, I don't know, a miasma of . . .dark iffyness, that I just couldn't shake. They never did anything wrong in actions (moreso than other typical jerk responses), but I always felt they were two steps away of letting some really disturbing part of their personality slip. And I'm almost certain one of them was not fond of black people (his gamertag + the way he took to my avatar = not promising). I actually feel a bit soiled. I don't know why this affected my so; it's probably just meshing with the rest of my life bad. |

Depicting minority or other under/misrepresented groups is tricky at best, and a negative response from that said group because of it can be discouraging. Especially considering no matter what you do there will be somebodies of that group that will not connect to or appreciate it in any way. But I think a great way to lessen the chances of a bad representation is to have more than one. Unless you're planning to create a horribly unrealistic perfect person who do no wrongs and tell no lies (and ignore that doing that will cause its own set of problems), the act of giving your minority character distinct personalities and flaws will put you in a danger zone for some people, by either removing them to far from their life experiences, creating what they feel as an unjust or untrue representation, or by falling into the stereotype pitfall, among other things. The act of adding another one (or even one more than that!) can greatly help you out in a couple of ways, I think- -For one, it's widening your personality and background net of the group, especially if you hit that same group from different social, economic, ethnic, etc angles. This will flesh out and give depth to the protrayed demographic that would not be possible residing in a single character. -But also, and what I believe more importantly, it can help tell everyone that this is not a one-size-fits-all embodiment of the group in a single character and that you are showing the group as being made up of separate individuals. This will give you a lot more freedom with your character when you show that you are not making a statement about that entire group with every action and thought that that character makes. i.e. It will be harder to get "The Black Guy" effect if there is another (prominent) one who can't be traded in for the other. Or you can stay away from pan-Asian or African sydrome if you have two of those people from different cultures. I'm sure there would be many groups that would be estatic to see more active variation when they are being represented. This could be an easy way to start.

I think it varies from person to person and situation from situation, but my rule of thumb is if someone becomes uncomfortable and/or upset, it would be a nice thing to stop it. *rolls eyes* I know, so incredibly PC, being considerate to others and all that jazz. . . |

Just wanted to make a quick list to put my thoughts together. Technically it could probably be any minority woman. Just to hear from people who more likely to 'get it' so to speak. A purely selfish list of my own desires. |

I just read Yonnondio by Tillie Olsen. What a trip. I threw me in such a mood. I can't shake it off. |

I may start using this LJ more, and people (depending out randomly interactive this thing is) may start actually reading what I write here. *sheepish* A disclaimer may be in order. If I ever say something that you think is crazy, and you don't plan to become . . .Evil . . .then I'm incredibly cool to have someone share thoughts with me. I'm off left-field in a few (when few = roughly everything) things from mainstream/pop views. If you are one for being curious, and not one for being judgmental, I won't get testy if anyone comes in here with a WTF. Condescension, disrespect, and any assorted '-ism's will be happily ignored. If anyone cares of my emotional response to such types it's basically me writing you off as morally corrupt and a disease to humanity. : D

For reals, I've been struggling with this for awhile, and I just came up with an unpopular answer: But to be truthful, having a racial dating preference involves some amount of racist motivation, imo. ( Read more... ) |

Haha this would be my first post dealing with anything wouldn't it? But this has been bugging me for a while, and I forgot I can use this thing for venting. But honestly, some people need to quit. Beauty standards, especially the specific Western (white Nordic type) woman's standard of beauty is not a biologically imprinted apex of beauty. It's a Cutlurally imprinted apex of beauty. . . : D Well, I guess you can say it's natural in the removed sense that human biology dictates cultural practices that may include what they believe is beautiful, but it's not directly biological. Period. I'm disturbed that people (scientist!) are unwilling to let go of the notion that Caucasions are genetically gifted. We should leave that back in the 19/20th century where it belongs; it's backwards thinking. But yeah, a couple of issues I have, in no particular order:
